Yield curve “inversions” belong to the latter group. At first sight, they are right: Yield curve inversions have been a consistent predictor of future downturns. Yield curve inversions take place when the yield on short-dated government debt climbs higher than that on longer-term bonds. Lower long-dated bond yields are seen as a sign that investors predict lower rates due to an economic downturn. As such, yield curve inversions have become a popular forward indicator of economic recessions.

As a financial planner, there's certain tough advice my clients never want to hear. Advice like, buy less house — and don't expect your home to be a good investment. As a financial advisor, I'm constantly giving people good advice they don't want. I know no one wants to hear this kind of money advice. No one wants to imagine a worst-case scenario, but if something actually went sideways in your financial life, you'll be glad you had multiple levels of safety net built into your overall plan.

CNN —Much remains unknown of course about the presidential general election whose traditional kick-off will come one year from today on Labor Day, 2024. Twenty states have likewise voted for the GOP presidential nominee in all four of those contests. That means 40 of the 50 states, or 80%, have voted the same way in four consecutive presidential elections. In the presidential elections of 2012, 2016 and 2020, though, the states where the margin of victory landed within four points of the national vote total dwindled. Eventually a Democratic choice to write off Florida and Ohio could provide a tactical benefit for the GOP presidential nominee.

De Graaf, a 30-year veteran of the European Commission, was tasked with resurrecting the EU office in the Bay Area. The generative AI boomGenerative AI was a virtually foreign concept when de Graaf arrived in San Francisco last September. In June, the European Parliament cleared a major step in passing the EU AI Act, which would represent the EU's package of AI regulations. Tech companies that have for years criticized the EU for overly aggressive regulations are now asking, "Why is it taking you so long?" The rapidly changing landscape of generative AI makes it tricky for the EU to quickly formulate regulations.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid//File PhotoSummaryCompanies US-listed China stocks fall as stimulus measures disappointFutures mixed: Dow up 0.02%, S&P down 0.06%, Nasdaq down 0.16%Aug 11 (Reuters) - U.S. stock index futures were subdued on Friday as investors awaited producer prices data that could offer more clarity on the Federal Reserve's rate hike path. Investors are now focused on the producer prices data due at 8:30 a.m ET that will offer more insight into inflation in the world's largest economy. U.S. Labor Department's producer price index (PPI) for final demand, is expected to rise 0.2% in July, after growing 0.1% in June. "This (PPI) data set is something of a crystal ball for consumer price inflation; when producers charge more for goods the higher costs are usually passed on to households." "Higher yields incentivize investors to park their cash in the safety of bonds, and therefore decreases demand for risky plays like equities."

LTL's bankruptcy proceedings have largely paused the 38,000 lawsuits against J&J, although one case was allowed to proceed to a $18.8 million verdict in July. But David Molton, an attorney for the official committee representing cancer claimants in LTL's bankruptcy, said that a temporary prohibition on new bankruptcy filings was appropriate, given LTL's repeated bankruptcy filings. Kaplan, who dismissed LTL's second bankruptcy, said he was not inclined to block future bankruptcy filings because circumstances could change in the next six months. But the judge said he was open to further written arguments on that point before issuing a formal decision closing LTL's second bankruptcy case next week.

Minneapolis CNN —When the June jobs report lands on Friday, it’s all but certain to show that the US labor market has added jobs for 30 consecutive months. And this year’s monthly average of 314,000 net job gains far exceeds what was seen before the pandemic, including during that 100-month stretch post-Great Recession. Sarah House, senior economist at Wells Fargo, said she’s expecting a “gradual cooling” to wash over the labor market. “The jobs market is not collapsing,” she said. The timing of the Fourth of July holiday resulted in a load of labor market data landing within 24 hours of the government’s monthly jobs report.

Multiple presidents, from George Washington to Donald Trump, have endorsed conspiracy theories. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln both openly espoused conspiracy theories of various kinds. It was important for me early on to make a distinction between actual conspiracies and conspiracy theories. And those tend to be a specific cover-up around specific things, there's an identifiable group of actors and once you start doing basic journalism, these things tend to unravel pretty quickly. So I think that's, unfortunately, where we're heading.
